DIY Music Production

Words by Moyo

It’s funny that when people ask me how I learned the instruments I play, I always tell them that I taught myself, but really, the internet taught me nearly everything I know in a way...

I was inspired to start playing instruments because I heard the songs I loved and I was desperate to know how I could play and sing them too. Just like learning instruments, the internet taught me how to produce music. We live in such a cool time because you can learn so many things from the internet. All it takes is curiosity. Before I started making music I would listen to some of my favourite music and always wonder if I could make songs like that too. I didn’t know how music was made though. I just thought that the recording artist played the instruments themselves or had a band and they all just recorded it at the same time or something. I had no idea what a music producer or sound engineer was. When I learned what a music producer did, it really fascinated me and I started to research who produced all these songs that I’ve always loved.

Producers like The Neptunes and Kaytranada really inspired me to start producing so I downloaded a demo version of FL Studio (a music production software). At first, it looked like a completely different language to me but I started to watch YouTube tutorials to learn it. Just like learning an instrument, it took a while to get the hang of it but I got better at it and developed a huge passion for it.

At the time I started producing I didn’t have many friends that were doing the same thing but through the internet, I found a community of like-minded people who had the same interests as me. Social media connected me with a lot of the people I’ve collaborated with.

I’m sure I’m not the only person that has a love/hate relationship with the internet. It’s sort of like that friend that you fight with all the time but at the end of the day you always make up. Although regardless of what I think, the internet can be an amazing tool if you use it well. I’m still a newbie to this and I’m learning a lot every day. My journey in making music is just starting and I’m excited for the future.
