RTÉ Shine Your Light

RTÉ in association with the Creative Ireland Programme hosted #SHINEYOURLIGHT #LONRAIGHDOSHOLAS on Sunday, 20 December to create an important, national moment of solidarity on the eve of the 2020 winter solstice. This was the third in a series of national moments of togetherness organised by RTÉ, with millions of people participating by shining a light in their windows, at their doorsteps or within their communities using a candle, lantern, torch or Christmas lights.

As part of this important celebration Thinkhouse, in partnership with Algorithm, had been commissioned to deliver a series of spectacular events across Ireland as well as the show’s spectacular opening sequence. The project included the delivery of 6 major art installations in Dublin, Kilkenny, Sligo, Waterford, Cork and Clare - bringing the art from RTÉ’s illuminations project to cities across the country using some of our most iconic sites and monuments as the canvases.

The multi-platform event culminated in a live TV broadcast on RTÉ One, a radio special on RTÉ Radio 1 and the six spectacular light-art installations. For this, Thinkhouse X Algorithm worked in collaboration with Coco Productions to creatively direct the show’s opening sequence with a theatrical, innovative lighting performance. This scene was shot in an especially significant location which was revealed when the show aired on RTÉ One on Dec 20th.

Ann-Marie Power, Head of Arts & Culture at RTÉ said: “We’ve worked in partnership with the Creative Ireland Programme to bring SHINE YOUR LIGHT SOLSTICE to life inviting everyone to #ShineYourLight this weekend. We want people to safely mark the rebirth of light and new beginnings for 2021. Along with Thinkhouse and Algorithm, working with the artists; the Illuminations artists’ work has been brought to the public in six memorable locations around the country, leading up to Sunday’s event. These six spectacular light projections are a big part of the whole Shine Your Light event, this time culminating in Sunday's gorgeous broadcast of SHINE YOUR LIGHT - SOLSTICE featuring some of our finest artists."

Tania Banotti, Director of Creative Ireland said: “We’re delighted to see some of Ireland’s best creative talent supporting Shine Your Light - Solstice. Ireland’s creative community has provided huge inspiration to many people over the past year, offering comfort, beauty and different ways of seeing things during our time in lockdown. This major project acknowledges the important role creativity plays in our lives and RTÉ has delivered an exceptional line up and campaign that promises to bring a lot of hope and entertainment to people this weekend.”

Johnny Cullen
, Film Producer at Thinkhouse said: "This was an epic collaboration between RTÉ, Thinkhouse and Algorithm, that brought artists' work from the illumination series to landmarks all over the country. It was an absolute pleasure to be a part of."

Thinkhouse has partnered with RTÉ on previous campaigns including ‘Create Don’t Contaminate’ in April 2020 and ‘RTÉ on Climate’ in 2019. Thinkhouse and Algorithm have already partnered on a number of different major cultural projects including numerous festival brand projects at at Electric Picnic and Longitude and most recently the ‘Clubbing is Culture’ project for Culture Night.

Together Thinkhouse and Algorithm worked with Coco Productions to deliver an awe-inspiring opening sequence. In addition, Thinkhouse developed the project’s creative identity, marketing and project management. Algorithm produced and creates dynamic immersive installations using the newest technology and innovative creative approaches. Together they bring a contemporary energy and edge to the project - something both Thinkhouse and Algorithm are known for.
